New Zealand’s psych-pop prince Ruban Nielson and the rest of Unknown Mortal Orchestra casually walked past the block-long line of fans waiting hours outside on a cold Monday for an anticipated performance at Numbers on Westheimer. Fawning murmurs spread throughout the girls in line who had bounded across the street from Avant Garden. Returning to Houston after their 2013 Fitzgerald’s performance with Foxygen, the neo-psychedelic four-piece returned with a deeper catalog of lo-fi-gone-funk extended jams. Elevated by Numbers’ iconic disco lighting, UMO played through yet another crisp, sharply performed set; satisfying fans of last year’s hits “Multi-Love” and “Can’t Keep Checking My Phone,” while pleasing long-time deep cut veterans with extended improvised solos riffing off older favorites like “Ffunny Ffriends,” “So Good at Being in Trouble” and “Swim and Sleep (Like a Shark).”
