A Quick Guide to Zine Fest Houston

Houston’s festival for DIY publishing throws down this Saturday at The Orange Show Center for Visionary Art.

Zine Fest Houston is your chance to snatch up everything from zines to mini-comics to DIY media and art.

Although we’re in the magazine business here at Houstonia, there’s nothing this editor loves more than zines, which, for the unacquainted, are mini-magazines frequently of the alternative and underground variety that are often self published.

This Saturday, Zine Fest Houston, Houston’s annual festival for all things zines, is throwing down at The Orange Show Center for Visionary Art (2334 Gulf Terminal Drive) from noon to 6 p.m., and we’re already clearing out space on our coffee tables for all of the creative small press and DIY wonders we’re planning on snatching up.

From zines to mini-comics to DIY media and art, Zine Fest Houston has it all. And after a visit to the festival, you’ll likely be inspired to get into the zine-making business yourself. If you’re planning on heading out to the festival (which you should), check out our guide first so you know what to expect.

What do you do at Zine Fest Houston?

The simple answer to this is browse. Vendors at Zine Fest Houston are set up at tables, so your task at the festival is to simply peruse each tables’ offerings and snatch up whatever goods strike your fancy. Guided tours of the nearby Orange Show will also be offered at the festival, and there will also be some performances and special talks.

The festival has a different theme every year, and this year the theme is medieval and fantasy. In keeping with that theme, the festival will have a live action role-playing arena this year where attendees will be able to LARP to their heart’s content with foam weapons.

How much does it cost to attend Zine Fest Houston?

Zine Fest Houston is an entirely free event to attend, although the zines and other artwork at the festival are not free—so bring your wallet so you can snatch up some cool DIY goods.

Is Zine Fest Houston good for kids?

Zine Fest is an all-ages festival, so kids are more than welcome to attend.
