Downstairs at the soon-to-open Urban Eats

Each Friday, Gastronaut rounds up the most notable openings and closings of the week.

Earlier this week, our own Natalie Harms dropped in on Urban Eats to check out Washington Ave.'s newest restaurant during its soft opening phase. That phase will be over soon, however; Urban Eats is planning its official grand opening next Monday, December 15. A press release describes what to expect in the two-story restaurant-slash-market from owner and culinary director Levi Rollins thusly: "Dishes are made in-house, procured locally, and delivered in three unique dining experiences: a full service bistro and bar, fast-casual eatery, and specialty market." To wit:

Downstairs features the specialty Market sells fresh baked breads, carefully sourced cheeses, cured meats and epicurean products that are sure to inspire the foodie in anyone. The fast casual eatery located here, serves brewed-to-order Java Pura Coffee Roasters coffee and espresso drinks; fresh baked muffins, croissants and breakfast sandwiches; grab and go sandwiches, salads and prepared meals.

The upstairs, full service Bistro + Bar offers fifty beers (including a full arsenal of Texas suds), a collection of wines from across America, and inspiring craft cocktails. The outdoor rooftop patio offers stunning views of the Houston skyline and live Standards, Jazz and Blues will be performed every Friday and Saturday after 9:00pm.

In closing news, we've got mixed feelings as we report that a Houstonia lunch favorite will soon be no more: the lease at Church's Chicken at Heights Blvd. and 6th St. has been taken over by the same group that runs Liberty Kitchen and BRC Gastropub. Yes, the new joint—tentatively called Lee's Chicken and Donuts—will also serve fried chicken when it opens, but will they serve Jalapeño Cheese Bombers and Oreo Biscuit Bites? Hmm? We thought not.
