Amazón Grill may not be the first spot you think of when you think of cheeseburgers, but maybe it should be.

As the "National Foods We Love" days continue to populate our social calendars, we celebrate a very momentous occasion this week—one which, in my opinion, deserves a whole month. But we'll have to make do with Friday, September 18 as the one day a year we properly celebrate National Cheeseburger Day, and with all of the juicy burger happenings, it will make for a very tasty Friday in the city. Check out some of the hottest spots serving up their signature cheeseburgers and what they have in store for hungry diners.

Amazón Grill
5114 Kirby Dr., 713-522-5888,

For the Latin burger-lover in you, there is only place to enjoy a truly remarkable cheeseburger with a kick: Amazón Grill, the casual concept from the ever-popular Cordúa Restaurant group, is offering diners out-of-the-box cheeseburger options to celebrate National Cheeseburger Day this Friday. The Jalapeño Popper Burger, topped with grilled jalapeños, cream cheese, bacon, onion, and tomato, packs a punch, while the Quesillo Burger is a cheese-a-holic's dream with gooey poblano queso and "guacumami" roasted peppers as toppings. Priced at $11.95, both burgers come with choice of a side from traditional sweet potato or french fries to the exotic yuca fries. Indeed a wild place to spend National Cheeseburger Day, Amazón Grill promises a cheeseburger experience unlike any other.

Bernie's Burger Bus

The Detention at Bernie's is the most extreme way we can imagine to celebrate National Cheeseburger Day.

Practically burger royalty in Houston, Bernie's Burger Bus is inviting Houstonians to participate in a social media contest between now and September 18 in which the winner will literally be crowned a Burger King for a lifetime. If you've experienced a burger from the fleet of beloved "burger buses" or the bricks-and-mortar Bellaire location, you know how picture-worthy they are.

In celebration of National Cheeseburger Day, the restaurant is asking the public to post their juiciest burger shots to social media (Twitter, Instagram or Facebook) between now and noon on Friday, September 18 along with the hashtags #berniesburgersforlife and #nationalcheeseburgerday for a chance to win a Bernie's Black Card that's good for free Bernie's Burger Bus burgers for life.

If you haven't stopped reading to immediately go post something, I'll make this quick... Along with a wide variety of signature cheeseburgers on the menu made up of everything from melty blue cheese to classic sharp cheddar, Bernie's is also famously known for the dangerously extreme, extra cheesy Detention burger. True to Texas size, the giant burger is made up of double patties, tipsy onions, and pecan-smoked bacon grilled cheese sandwiches as buns. If you're up for the challenge, it is perhaps the most extreme way to celebrate National Cheeseburger Day in Houston.

JerryBuilt Homegrown Burgers
3501 W. Holcombe Blvd., 713-664-2874,

Holcombe in the West University area, JerryBuilt Homegrown Burgers offers a quality selection of burgers made with all-natural, hormone-free ingredients. Traditional menu items include Jerry's Classic Cheeseburger, priced at only $5 this Friday in celebration of National Cheeseburger Day, while the flavorful Big Kahuna—a Houstonia favorite—piled high with teriyaki-glazed pineapple, provolone, mango, bacon, avocado and something called "island slaw" is reserved for the more adventurous foodie. JerryBuilt's large menu is packed with all sorts of additional items, from salads, chicken sandwiches, hot dogs and even veggie burgers. The proof is in the piled-high burgers at JerryBuilt, where the hand spun shakes flow like wine and the smell of freshly baked buns will keep the National Cheeseburger Day celebration going all weekend long.
