With the Patriots' win last night, Houston will now commence cleaning up the city after a week-long party to which the whole country was invited. If you, like many of us, hid in your house during Super Bowl weekend, our fourth annual Gumbo Smackdown is the perfect opportunity to get back out there.

Each year, we invite our favorite gumbo-making restaurants to compete in the ultimate test of who makes the best roux (and who stuffs their soups full of the best meat and seafood). And each year, the party keeps getting bigger and better—so much, in fact, the Houstonia house could no longer contain our sprawling street party. So for 2017, we're moving venues.

This year, 15 of the city's best restaurants will be bringing their gumbo to Sugar Land Town Square, including past winners and new contenders:

  • Antone's Famous Po'Boys
  • Beaver's
  • Bernie's Burger Bus
  • Fish City Grill
  • Floyd's Cajun Seafood and Texas Steakhouse
  • Freedom to Indulge
  • Genesis Steakhouse & Wine Bar
  • Holley's Seafood Restaurant & Oyster Bar
  • Jonathan's The Rub
  • Main Kitchen & 806 Lounge
  • Peli Peli Galleria
  • Saint Arnold Brewing Company
  • The Burger Joint
  • The Rouxpour

In addition to unlimited bowls of gumbo from noon to 4 p.m., your ticket to Gumbo Smackdown will also get you unlimited beer from Saint Arnold and unlimited cocktails from Jack Daniels. It also enlists you to vote for the People's Choice winner, who'll be crowned alongside the Judges' Winner at 3 p.m. The Zydeco Dots will play throughout the afternoon.

Tickets are $40 in advance and $45 at the door (although, if the last three Gumbo Smackdowns are any predictor of this year's ticket sales, we'll be sold out before Saturday and door prices).

Proceeds from the sale of raffle tickets will benefit Lunches of Love, a non-profit committed to helping end childhood hunger in Fort Bend County by providing a free nutritious sack lunch during extended school holidays and weekends. Meanwhile, all uneaten food will be donated to Second Servings, Houston’s only prepared food rescue organization, picking up surplus unserved food and delivering it promptly and safely to shelters, soup kitchens, and low-income housing.
