A rendering of Hamsa in Rice Village.

The team behind ritzy Montrose steakhouse Doris Metropolitan will open a modern Israeli concept called Hamsa in summer 2020 in Rice Village.

Set for 5555 Morningside Dr., Hamsa aims for an upscale casual vibe with big proteins and vegetable and rice dishes for lunch and dinner. Its wine list will include a selection of bottles from the Middle East.

“Modern Israeli cuisine is just like the country of Israel itself,” said Sash Kurgan, co-owner of Hamsa and Doris with Itai Ben Eli and Itamar Levy. “It’s a melting pot of traditional Jewish food from all over the world, along with the local Arabic food of the region. Its diversity creates a rich palette of tastes and aromas that I’m very excited to share with Houston.”

Hamsa will be designed by New York-based firm Future Green Studio. Look for a tree-shaded terrace, wooden outdoor decks and intimate lighting.

The Doris team opened their steakhouse in Houston in late 2017, garnering considerable praise for its modern twist on the classic concept. They also own locations of Doris Metropolitan in New Orleans and in Costa Rica.
