Summer's (nearly) here and the time is right for ice cream. Van Leeuwen is opening its first Teas location at 11 a.m. Saturday at 2565 Amherst St. in Rice Village. As you may recall, Van Leeuwen is a New York City-based shop that has more than 30 dairy and vegan flavors.
For opening day, the shop will offer $1 scoops all day Saturday, and Donkeeboy will be creating a live mural outside. Plus, through a collaboration with Yellow Rose Distilling, a new flavor—Yellow Rose Bourbon Pecan Pie—will be served.
This isn't all for Van Leeuwen in Houston; additional locations are anticipated this summer for Uptown Park and Montrose. For more, visit Van Leeuwen.
Speaking of Rice Village, the newest location of Velvet Taco is here. It opened last week at 2525 Rice Blvd. Velvet Taco, the DFW-based taqueria with five locations in the city, specializes in non-traditional taco flavors like spicy tikka chicken, chicken and waffle, Nashville hot tofu, and Korean fried rice.
We know a little more about Shokku Ramen, the new tenant at the former BCK space at 933 Studewood, that's set to open this year. Coming from Las Vegas, it carries an anime theme and features signature items like oxtail ramen and drowning gyoza. A BBQ brisket ramen with crunchy fries, pickles, pickled onions, and a smoky barbecue-style broth, is being planned for the Houston expansion.
Also, Shokku boasts the Shinigami Challenge, a spicy bowl that is said to include about 4 million Scoville units of heat. Eat it all and get a photo on the Wall of Warriors (plus, the meal is free). For more on this new concept, visit shokkuramen.com.
