Van Leeuwen's Mac 'N' Cheese ice cream

Last week, in celebration of National Macaroni ‘N’ Cheese Day, New York-based ice cream company Van Leeuwen, which recently decided to partner with Kraft to produce the ultimate late-night, what-do-I-have-in-the-fridge snack: mac ‘n’ cheese ice cream.

When we first heard about this mashup, we were a little apprehensive, as was the rest of the internet. But when the ice cream officially launched on July 14 and people started to go in for the scoop, we were all a little shocked to find out people thought it was good (it quickly went viral and Van Leeuwen’s website crashed as folks clamored for a pint). So, we had to try it ourselves.

Kraft Macaroni & Cheese

The first spoonful is cheesy, as you would expect, but not overwhelmingly so. The main flavor is the rich, creamy custard base, with the classic mac ‘n’ cheese taste subtly woven throughout. It’s sweet, tangy, cutting-edge, and, overall, not bad. We had more than one bite.

Officially sold out, but you can still enter to win two pints (plus two extra pints of Van Leeuwen ice cream) at MacIceCream.com until July 21, 2021.

Vegan Earl Grey Tea

Van Leeuwen’s dairy-based Earl Grey Tea flavor helped make it famous. This July, the company’s decided to roll out a dairy-free version. The oat-milk base was steeped with rishi black tea leaves, then the tea leaves were blended into the base giving it a light, pleasantly grainy texture. The Earl Grey flavor comes in pops and balances out the natural sweetness of the ice cream base.

Sold out on the East Coast. Available for $12/pint on the West Coast. Available in scoop shops.

Vegan Banana Pudding

We love when ice cream tastes just like what it's supposed to be. The vegan banana pudding flavor is made with roasted and caramelized organic bananas that are blended into the cashew milk base. Once it’s frozen, chunks of house-made vanilla wafers are added in. The result is an airy, but still creamy, concoction that truly makes you feel like you’re eating a cup of banana pudding.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Cookie Swirl

Made with light milk chocolate, peanut butter cookies, and dulce de leche, this dairy-based ice cream is textured, chewy, thick, and creamy. The peanut butter cookie breaks up the chocolate ice cream flavor, lending an alternating peanut butter taste that is not at all overwhelming.

Sold out. Available in scoop shops.

Black Cherry Chip

Oregon-grown cherries are cooked with a small amount of sugar and blended into the custard base with almond oil extract. If that doesn’t sound heavenly, then we don’t know what does. Chunks of black cherry mixed in offset Van Leeuwen’s signature buttery base and complement the cherry-vanilla taste, while dark chocolate chips give the ice cream an occasional burst of chocolate.
