The Pink Boxes are coming.
Voodoo Doughnut, wielding its signature pink boxed donuts, is expanding its reach in Houston. The 24-hour doughnut company based in Portland, Oregon has two locations in Houston, and now opening its third location in Cypress. While the suburbs may seem like an odd choice, it’s all in the plan一the doughnut shop has a history of planting in unsuspected locations.
"We’re really not the traditional doughnut shop… we want to be exclusive. You’ll have to search us out to find us. At most of our stores, there’s a fairly long queue. That’s what makes it worth the wait. It’s about the experience," 30-year Voodoo Doughnut CEO, Chris Schultz told Foodable Network.
In 2003, Voodoo Doughnut became the brainchild of Kenneth "Cat Daddy" Pogson and Tres Shannon who plotted "world doughnut domination." As longtime friends, they decided to begin their conquests after opening the only doughnut shop in downtown Portland. It was an entrepreneurial venture that synthesized high caliber hospitality and their trademark D.I.Y. brand of show business, according to their website.
Voodoo Doughnut soon began in a "hole-in-the-wall storefront," squished between two nightclubs, but humble beginnings only inspired their daring blend of classic and atypical pastries. Within the first month, the brand received national acclaim, being featured on The Travel Channel, The Cooking Channel and The Tonight Show – to only name a few. And since, the business has progressively expanded. In 2008, the Voodoo Doughnut brand opened its second store and has since grown to nine locations in five states. The Montrose location in Houston marks one of the latest in Texas.
The spooky sweets brand has built a jaw-dropping consumer base. Its popularity, flavor consistency, and one-of-a-kind experience have loyal customers begging for a shop in their neighborhood. Luckily, Houstonians will have their wishes granted sooner than later. Houston Business Journal's Savannah Mehrtens first reported that the new location will be located in North Houston, replacing the former Slim Chickens at 9320 Barker Cypress Road. Additionally, a submission to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation gives credence to renovations plans at the same location.
Voodoo Doughnut’s first Houston suburb location is bound to stir up trouble for sugar-dieters and commuters. Expect long lines of eager customers spilling out of the shop’s front doors and drive-thru.
The new Voodoo Doughnut will be located at 9320 Barker Cypress Road and is slated to open in early 2022. For more information, visit the website.
