Martin is a part of the Facebook group Texas Tikiphiles, dedicated to Texas-based lovers of tiki. This year he is set to host the third-annual Texas Tikiphiles Takeover Luau at the Enchanted Tiki Lounge on Aug. 5.

Brian Martin grew up in California making frequent visits to Disneyland, where he was always enamored by the Enchanted Tiki Room, inspired by the rich traditions of the South Pacific islands and the mid-century tiki craze.

So when Martin bought a home in Conroe with his wife Jenni and their two sons, their backyard became Houston's own semi-public Enchanted Tiki Lounge complete with pool, deck and palapa tiki hut with Texas-carved tikis adorning the open space. But after unexpectedly finding a new home nearby, the house—tiki lounge and all—is now up for sale.

For $184,500, tikiphiles can have their own tropical haven, not to mention three bedrooms, two baths and an indoor extension of the tiki lounge dubbed The Stowaway that adds even more island vibes—not to mention bedroom decór inspired by Disney's Frontierland and Tomorrowland. “The house does run on the whole Disneyland theme,” Martin says.

There are no commercial ties associated with the Enchanted Tiki Lounge—it’s more of a local attraction for Houstonians and out-of-towners to flock to for fun times, provided they give Martin a heads-up. Over the years he's hosted events including an outdoor screening of Batman (the 1966 television version) and a Tikiphiles Takeover Luau.

“It’s not a business, it’s more like a following,” he says. “It’s kind of like a standing open invitation for people. A lot of times on the weekends I’ll just open it up to whoever.”

Although the couple have found a new home, they still hope to emulate the same kind tiki paradise at their new place, hopefully on a greater scale for more people to enjoy.

“I can’t live without it,” Martin says. "I have to have that—that’s my getaway.”
