A Contemporary Craftsman in the Greater Heights

This home embodies Old World presence with a host of modern perks inside.

This home in the Greater Heights neighborhood originated with a request for two very different styles from two very different eras: contemporary and Craftsman, the latter which originated between 1905–1930. “It's a funny thing when a client comes in our door asking for a house that has two distinct feels,” the 2Scale Architects website stated about the home. The firm designed the custom home, which was built by Southland Homes, in 2017. “We must ask ourselves, ‘How contemporary? How Craftsman do you want it?’” The result is one that embodies old-school craftsmanship and street presence, yet reveals a suite of contemporary finishes and modern perks inside.

This starts at the front porch, tucked under a deep hipped roof topped with a street-facing dormer, and with a host of decorative wood details that evoke the Craftsman influence, from the columns and exposed braces, to the rafter tails poking out from beneath the eaves. The porch wraps around an interior room lined in windows and lovely millwork, leaving more than enough space to set up a few chairs and while away an afternoon.

The standout on the main floor is the flowing floor plan, with the formal rooms interwoven with cozier spots and a gorgeous kitchen. A bespoke dropped wood ceiling and paneled wall denote the formal dining room, as well as a piano room. Beyond those, the living room is tucked into the back of the house, with access to a covered patio via a stacking glass door that opens to a full outdoor kitchen and dining area.

At the front, find one bedroom (currently styled as an office) that overlooks the front porch, wrapped on three sides with windows, rich wood paneled walls, coffered ceiling, and floor-to-ceiling cabinetry.

We have to pause at the kitchen, which strikes a balance between function and glam. Lots of custom cabinetry and a big prep space at the center with casual seating on one side are complemented by gourmet appliances, brass accents, and gorgeous stone that waterfalls to the floor around the island.

There’s a total of four bedrooms and four bathrooms, with the primary suite on the second floor. It’s also got touches of glamor, with a walk-in shower, sizable double vanity topped in granite, and a soaking tub set up beneath the windows.

While the Craftsman touches convey a lot of character in the new build, even better is how, this being contemporary, means there’s so much storage. Plus, from the dry bar in the second-floor hall, to the walk-in pantry with a dedicated desk for recipe research and wet bar with a pretty custom stained-glass window, all of it looks just as good as the rest of the house.
