High-Contrast Elegance in a Montrose New Build

This two-story home in Houston’s hip neighborhood masterfully allies white with black, navy, and dark wood tones.

An eat-in island is a beautiful and practical feature in this new Montrose home.

In a city that leads the nation in new home construction—15,400 single-family home permits have already been issued in 2023, more than either Dallas or New York City—it’s easy to assume each new build in Houston is the same as the next. Not so. Take this home in Montrose finished by Hampton Lane Builders this year: It shakes up the gray palette that’s been dominating interiors for the last decade with a bolder, high-contrast one in classic black and white, using high-quality wood and stone finishes to further make the point.

The statement staircase leads to four bedrooms and four and a half baths.

This starts at the exterior, which goes all in with inky siding and black-framed windows. Inside, find the inverse: crisp white walls warmed by natural hickory flooring. The floorplan has been executed with entertaining in mind. At the front of the house, a formal dining room is paired with a connected wet bar and butler’s pantry. Here’s where everything kicks up several notches, thanks to a suite of black and navy cabinetry and dark stone counters. Black-framed glass doors cleverly divide the space from the rest of the home and offer peek-a-boo views. The powder room in the stair hall is equally dramatic, with its black walls, glossy wall tile, and a floating stone sink.

Black, navy, and dark wood tones contrast with the white throughout the home.

Design is all about balance, so the rest of the home veers light and bright with judiciously chosen dark accents mixed in to ensure everything stays on point. In the stair hall, an internal window reveals the dark wood-clad wine room, and an elegant black metal railing lines the staircase. The kitchen and living room at the back of the house have a large eat-in island composed of more black cabinets and stone, as well as a fireplace feature wall of dark-stained wood.

Marble and stone add to the elegance of the home, including in one of the bathrooms.

Upstairs, there are three bedrooms with en-suite baths, and the luxe primary suite. The latter strikes a perfect balance in its dual, stone-topped vanities and black marble wet room, with walk-in shower and soaking tub. Even the covered outdoor kitchen in the backyard doesn’t deviate, with its charcoal stone grill station.
