No party in Houston from now through, we don’t know, 2019, will be complete without our two Simone-Olympians: gymnast Simone Biles of Spring, winner of one bronze and four gold medals (and erstwhile Houstonia cover model!), and swimmer Simone Manuel of Sugar Land, who took home two silver and two gold medals from the Games. Simones, you’ve made us so proud. Not to overdo it, but…we love you. Also making us proud: Kevin Naderi of Roost, who owned Bobby Flay on Beat Bobby Flay with his take on the cabbage roll (no easy feat), Khizr Khan, who owned the Democratic National Convention with his pocket Constitution (and who we’re claiming as our own because he originally emigrated from Pakistan to Houston with his family), and Stella Walters, who owned her own fear by starting Safe Walk Home Northside to help kids get home safely from school (in response to 11-year-old Josue Flores’s murder last year). And finally, a guest who, well, has not exactly made us proud, no: Ken Reed, who recently made national news by organizing a White Lives Matter rally in front of our local chapter of the NAACP. Really, Ken? Really?
