Item of the Week: The Surrealist Birkenstock

The perfect meeting of the practical and the absurd.

By Tricia Gilbride February 21, 2014

Somehow, in the past year or so, Birkenstocks have become high fashion. Yes, your hippie uncle's favorite footwear has been popping up in street style photos the world over. Givenchy has come out with their own take on the sandal, the (sold out) $795 floral variety shown above.

The latest in Birkenstock mania comes from Opening Ceremony, who have just released a capsule collection featuring the work of René Magritte, which will come in handy if you need your surrealist fix but can’t be bothered to spend an afternoon browsing the Menil Collection (which, by the way, has a Magritte exhibition called The Mystery of the Ordinary running until June.)
