Local fashion gurus reveal the trends to expect this fall.

As a new season approaches, aspiring designers and entrepreneurs gathered at the Elaine Turner boutique in Rice Village to hear a panel of fashion influencers chat fads for fall. The event was hosted by Fashion Group International, a nonprofit that connects and supports industry professionals. The evening’s panelists included designers Elaine Turner and Chloe Dao as well as makeup artist Aubrie Layne.

Turner kicked off the trends report with a “cheat sheet” handout showcasing colors and accessories of the season. She advised that textured patterns, deep olive greens, and mushroom grays will be big for fall, as will be the fold-over purse, pouch clutch, and chunky heel.

Layne, who beautifies Houstonians at The Vanity Lounge (disclosure: the lounge is owned by Houstonia publisher Diane Caplan), suggested taking the colors of summer such as coral or turquoise and transitioning them into fall by juxtaposing a matte finish. Not a fan of month-to-month trends that come and go, Layne said she prefers classic looks with a twist that real people can pull off.

The evening wrapped up with Dao’s top four trends for fall, which include sweaters, plaid, ponchos, and the mod look. She explained that trends recycle themselves year after year with tweaks along the way. Still, she said, she always follows her own golden rule: "When designing or styling, consider the three E’s of fashion: easy. Effortless. Edge.”
