Crochet, Crossbodys and Chuck Taylors: What to Wear at FPSF

Say good-bye to muddy hills this year and hello to stylish festival fashion that won't be ruined by Monday.

Crochet and a crossbody bag are must-haves at this year's Free Press Summer Fest.

Houston's biggest music festival, Free Press Summer Fest, is taking place this weekend at NRG Park due to the aftereffects of the recent flooding in its usual home, Eleanor Tinsley Park. Seasoned veterans might remember that last year’s festival was as muddy as a duck puddle, so the clear upside of the move this year is that your white Converse will still be white come Monday and slipping in the mud and ruining your outfit is one less thing to worry about.

The change in location gives you a chance to re-plan your outfit to ensure that your look will still be extremely stylish—because let’s face it, you still want to look cool while rocking out. You have your wristband, you know which friends you're going with, you've mapped out which artists you want to see, now you need to figure out what to wear while listening to Weezer, Ben Kweller, Tears for Fears or Major Lazer. Don't worry Houston, we've got you covered!

  • Fringe, lace, crochet, kimonos and shorts are said to be the unofficial music festival staples. Pair them with neon-colored base layers or layer as much of each together as you think you can stand in the heat.
  • You want your feet to be comfy—trust me on this—since you will be walking from stage to stage and dancing all day and all night long. In a sea of crop tops, lace shorts and flower crowns, gladiator sandals are feminine yet fierce. Flat ankle boots also pair well with denim cut-offs and a loose fitting graphic tee, and a pair of converse goes with any outfit you decide to put together. You can’t really ever go wrong with Chuck Taylors.
  • Protect your eyes from the harsh Houston sun with shades that offer UV protection. They are the perfect finishing touch for any look you put together, from the classic Ray-Ban aviators to a pair of mirrored or heart-shaped sunnies. You could even channel your inner hippie with round sunglasses.
  • Steer clear of bringing big purses or anything you have to rummage through. A small, hands-free crossbody or backpack won’t get in the way while dancing—and it’s the perfect size for you to carry your phone, wallet and sunscreen.

First time at FPSF? Do yourself a favor and take a refillable water bottle. Hydrate, be safe and enjoy the music!
