Soft sand between your toes, the sound of waves crashing against the shore—the beach is my happy place. What’s in my beach bag, you ask? Not much, just a few essentials that I can’t beach without.
Supergoop! Skin Soothing Mineral Sunscreen, $28 at Sephora
First and foremost, sunscreen is a must—especially at the beach. Since we tend to spend more time in the direct sunlight (and in less clothing), it’s important to wear sunscreen with SPF 30, at least. This lightweight mineral sunscreen from Supergoop! smooths on skin effortlessly without leaving greasy residue. Just don’t forget to reapply after catching a few waves.
Havaianas Flip-Flops, $18 at Nordstrom
Talk about comfortable footwear, Havaianas have a cushioned foot-bed with textured rubber soles that make you feel like you’re walking on a cloud. A sturdy pair of thong sandals can be hard to find, but with straps that never lose shape, these are perfect for navigating the sand to your perfect spot and shielding your feet from the burning walk back.
Not That Kind of Girl by Lena Dunham, $28 at Brazos Bookstore
It wouldn’t be a day at the beach without a good beach read to keep you company. As her doppelgänger and other twin soul, I chose Lena Dunham’s Not That Kind of Girl. This candid collection of personal essays is definitely a page-turner that will have you laughing out loud, and even crying, as she illuminates the experiences—and struggles—of growing up and making your way in the world.
Vaseline Lip Therapy Cocoa Butter, $2 at Target
Can’t forget your precious pucker! Your lips need a little loving too, especially after hours in the sun. I typically don an oversized floppy hat to protect my moneymaker at the beach, but I’m always sure to keep my lips hydrated to avoid any additional sun-induced irritation. The cocoa butter locks in moisture to instantly soften and soothe dry lips. Be careful not to get any sand in your little tub—it's bad enough it’s in your suit.
