With a name that captures her style and personality, it's no wonder that Shantae Smith, CEO and founder of Outspokenly Chic is a fashion stylist and blogger. From incorporating different styles into her own personal wardrobe to what inspires her as a stylist, Shante is never afraid to break the rules when it comes to fashion.

You just returned from New York Fashion Week—what were some of the top trends you noticed for next season that you hope to incorporate into your own wardrobe?

Some of the trends from the runway that I would love to incorporate into my wardrobe would be robes and bright, bold colors such as yellow, cobalt and navy blue, khaki and tons of stripes. We will see many of these trends next season. Personally I would pair a fancy robe with a pair of distressed jeans.

What inspired you to become a fashion stylist and blogger?

I have worked in retail stores such as Rainbow, Bebe, BCBG, JC Penney's and Dillard’s since I was 18 years old. I always enjoyed helping customers pick out outfits for special events. I also had the privilege to dress mannequins how I wanted, which provided me with the opportunity to experiment with different looks.

How do you put some of your favorite outfits together?

When I choose outfits, I like to think about current trends I have seen on the runway and then figure out how I can incorporate my own personal twist on them. My personal style is trendy, chic, urban and retro so I try to build an outfit that blends all of those elements.

Do you have any favorite Houston boutiques?

I don’t really shop at boutiques, but I was recently invited to an event at Chloe Dao. I purchased this hot, red romper there that I fell in love with and I even wore for a recent photoshoot for a Valentine’s Day post on my blog.

What are some things you carry with you at all times?

My Michael Kors watch and my Nike flip-flops. The flip-flops are great for when my feet need a break from wearing heels. I am also really into matte lipsticks and always carry some in my purse. The two colors I wear right now are in Trust Issues and Sad Girl.

What would you say to the up-and-coming fashionista who is a little fearful of stepping out of her comfort zone?

I would say that it is perfectly okay to step out of your comfort zone and be outspoken through your clothing. Sometimes the ugliest pieces turn out to be the flyest pieces when styled right. Back in my younger days, I used to be very hardcore in thrifting and I could just put some of the most random pieces together and make it reflect my style. Fashion has no rules.
