Attention, shoppers: There’s a new boutique in town. Scout & Molly’s, a North Carolina-based women’s retail franchise, is the latest addition to Sugar Land’s First Colony Mall. Last Saturday, May 12 marked the store’s official grand opening, though it’s been doing steady business since a soft opening in April.

A former Wall Street executive, owner Jessica Lapsia traded an eight-year corporate finance career and life on the East Coast for an entirely new venture down south. After moving with her husband and two young children to Sugar Land, Lapsia found herself craving a change.

“I thought, since we are going to be settled down here, this is my opportunity to think out of the box,” she says. “I started researching and I stumbled upon Scout & Molly’s, and it really hit home with me. The whole prospect of well-known, quality labels–getting that to women here, I saw that opportunity.”

Scout & Molly’s operates more than 50 franchised locations in 19 states, including one in West U. Lapsia estimates a younger clientele at her location; she stocks a range of contemporary and more mature brands in an effort to cater to the mom-and-daughter set that frequents First Colony.

Though they work with corporate buyers, Scout & Molly franchisees have nearly total independence over their inventory, Lapsia says. She carries brands like BB Dakota, Cupcakes and Cashmere, Trina Turk, Spiritual Gangster, Black Orchid Denim, and more.

“I would love to wear what I sell, and I just love the aspect of making somebody feel special for whatever occasion it is,” she says. “When you’re dressed well, you feel pretty; it changes your mood. I love that.”

There are commonalities, of course. Scout & Molly’s locations feel similarly boho-chic with price points hovering around $100; shoppers can reliably enter one to find an outfit for a day at the beach or a night on the town. The Houston outposts also carry some of the same labels, like Elan and Houston-based Sofia, the latter an Italian designer known for breezy, silk pieces. At the end of the day, though, Lapsia is there for her Sugar Land customer base, willing to tailor her stock to their preferences with weekly introductions of new inventory.

After settling into her new space, Lapsia hopes to get more involved in the Sugar Land community, including by hosting shopping events and partnering with local non-profits. She’s encouraged by the feedback she’s received from the community in her first month of business, especially as a newcomer to retail.

“A lot of people have come in and made me feel like I’m moving in the right direction,” Lapsia says. “It’s really heart-warming to hear a customer say, This is what I was looking for. I’m so glad you guys are here.

Scout & Molly’s Sugar Land is located outside next to Black Walnut Café in First Colony Mall, 16535 Southwest Freeway, Suite 1018. Hours: Monday–Saturday, 10 a.m.–9 p.m.; Sunday, noon–6 p.m.
