Harriet Beecher Stowe once said, "Women are the real architects of society," and here in Houston, we have plenty of reason to believe she was right. When it comes to strong female characters, we have them in spades, from history-making suffragists to today's cadre of trail-blazers in male-dominated industries. We at Houstonia told a slew of their stories earlier this year in a special editorial feature, The Houstonian Woman, and now, we're excited to bring those pages to life.
We'll do so with Woman Up! hosted by Sawyer Yards, a weekend of wellness and education on Saturday, September 15 and Sunday, September 16 at Sawyer Yards, full of inspiring speakers, social sweat sessions, workshops, demos, and, yes, shopping. Our two-day inaugural event will celebrate the bold women of our past, present, and future, bringing together business owners, community leaders, and influencers from across the city to laud their achievements and inspire likeminded ambitious Houstonians to continue the work. After all, the future is female.
Though we've long admired and recognized Houston's influential female figures, we were inspired to toast them now more than ever by the surge of reenergized women's empowerment movements sweeping our nation and world. Through #MeToo, #Time'sUp, an unprecedented number of women running for major political office, and scores of other causes and campaigns, we've demonstrated that 2018 is the Year of the Woman. We're here to revel in that fact and, most importantly, keep the momentum up.
Tickets are on sale now, and a portion of proceeds will benefit Girls Inc. of Greater Houston, a non-profit devoted to inspiring all girls "to be strong, smart, and bold" through programing like mentorship, skill-building, and promoting healthy activities.
The fun begins on Saturday, September 15 with a speaker series featuring a fierce lineup of women who have busted glass ceilings, overcome adversity, and carved out a place for themselves in everything from plumbing to vascular surgery. We'll first hear a keynote from Kam Franklin, lead singer of popular Gulf Coast soul band The Suffers, followed by breakout sessions on topics like lifestyle and fashion with designer Elaine Turner, overcoming adversity, body positivity, living an emotionally healthy life, and more. Next, group meditation will precede a panel of more of Houston's most notable women–Stephanie Wittles Wachs, Vee Ramos, Davina Davidson, Kaliah Guillory, Monica Ryan, Kate Mehnert, Jenny Dial Creech, Mandy Jeronimus, and Lori Choi–followed by an evening cocktail reception presented by the Salon on Kirby, where we'll raise a glass to all these accomplishments.
The next day, women and men ages 18 and up can get their sweat on in various group classes throughout the day at one of the five fitness studios at Sawyer Yards–RacePace, WAPilates, Orangetheory Fitness, CycleBar, and Love Dance Houston. Later, stretch it out with a group yoga flow, plus drink and brunch tokens. Head to Silver Street Studios from 10 a.m.–4 p.m. for a family-friendly Girl Power Bash & Pop-Up Shop full of women-centric boutiques, new designers, artists, brunch bites, cocktails, demos, workshops, and more, all under one roof.
Tickets range from $5–$95, and you can find more details on our event site. Plus, the promo code EARLYBIRD will get you 10 percent off tickets to our speaker series and social sweat sessions. Grab your girlfriends and we'll see you there!
