10 Emmys Looks That Deserve Their Own Awards
Embellished jumpsuits, metallic gowns, and political statements all found a place on the gold carpet.
NBC aired the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards on Monday evening with a show-stopping gold carpet and plenty of metallic ensembles to match. Celebrities continued to use fashion as a vehicle for political statements, including Black-ish star Jenifer Lewis, who sported a studded Nike sweatshirt in support of the brand’s new campaign featuring Colin Kaepernick. "I am wearing Nike to applaud them for supporting Colin Kaepernick and his protest against racial injustice and police brutality," Lewis told Variety. Sarah Sophie Flicker, wife of the director Jesse Peretz (nominated for his work on Netflix’s Glow), required no interview to make her thoughts known: “STOP KAVANAUGH 202-224-3121” was scrawled in black ink across her arm.
On a less serious note, Tiffany Haddish reminded us of the gym-class parachute, though the Prabal Gurung gown was actually inspired by the colors of the Eritrean flag, Haddish's father’s home country. Numerous stars wore pieces straight from the NYFW runway: Ellie Kemper in J Mendel SS19, Tatiana Maslany and Regina King in neon custom Christian Siriano SS19, Rachel Brosnahan and Sarah Paulson in Oscar de la Renta SS19, and Thandie Newton in Brandon Maxwell.
