HDC Showroom Sample Sale

When: Through Saturday, August 24; 9 a.m.–5 p.m. weekdays, 9 a.m.–4 p.m. Saturday
Where: Houston Design Center, 7026 Old Katy Road
What: The 11th annual sample sale began Tuesday, August 20 and runs through the week, offering unprecedented savings on antiques, art, furniture, lighting, accessories, rugs, and more. Shoppers can also refuel with on-site food trucks and, for $10 admission, partake in design-related events, like expert panels on Thursday (4–6 p.m.) and Friday (10 a.m.–noon). This year's event benefits Dwell with Dignity, which designs and installs complete home interiors for families in need.

How to Bring Your Style Home with Emily & Meritt

When: Friday, August 23; 5–6 p.m.
Where: Pottery Barn Highland Village, 4011 Westheimer
What: Celebrated design duo Emily Current and Meritt Elliott discuss finding your personal style with Sophie Miura of New York-based home decor magazine Domino at this free event. The pair will also preview their latest collaboration with Pottery Barn, which melds their casual fashion sensibility with cozy home must-haves like rich, textured shams and triple-washed, garment-dyed bedding—plus, there's free drinks and raffle prizes.

AIA Houston Sandcastle Competition

When: Saturday, August 24; 10 a.m.–5 p.m.
Where: East Beach, Galveston
What: For the 33rd year, dozens of teams hit Galveston's beachfront armed with shovels, intricate design plans, and the dream of winning the prestigious Gold Bucket Award. Spectators flock to watch the meticulous beach architects craft entire sand cities over five hours of non-stop work. By the end of the day, awards are given for categories including best traditional castle, best architectural icon, public favorite, and best Houston-centric build. New award categories for this year: fables and folklore, pop culture decades, marine life, and geometric.

Axelrad Vintage & Art Market

When: Sunday, August 25; 2–8 p.m.
Where: Axelrad, 1517 Alabama St.
What: Everyone's favorite beer garden hosts its final Sunday Funday, where local artists and makers set up shop to sell their original and unique finds. It's free to attend, plus it's kid- and pet-friendly.
