THE TO-DOUX LIST is lifestyle editor Abby Ledoux’s weekly roundup of pop-ups, markets, and whatever else she feels like doing around Houston each Friday–Sunday (generally). To submit an event for consideration, email details to [email protected]
When: Friday, Jan. 16; 7 p.m.–2 a.m.
Where: Howl at the Moon, 612 Hadley St.
What: Grab your velour scrunchies, stretchy chokers, baggy overalls, and butterfly clips, and get ready to relive the best decade yet (in our humble opinion) and party like it's 1999 all night long at our favorite dueling piano bar. But seriously, don't mess this up: A rad '90s outfit gets you free admission, and there will be contests inside. There will also be killer drink specials (like $25 "Fresh Prince" buckets—that's 86 ounces of the good stuff, folks) and—duh—all the best '90s music.
Emerson Rose Birthday Sale
When: Saturday, Jan. 18; 8 a.m.–7 p.m.
Where: Emerson Rose, 1637 Westheimer
What: One of our all-time fave Houston boutiques celebrates its birthday in the most generous way: a blow-out sale. The Montrose location will open at 8 a.m. for the occasion, and early birds are rewarded with the biggest markdowns: everything in-store is half-off (!) for the first hour. Then it's 40 percent off from 9–10 a.m., 30 percent off from 10–11 a.m., and 25 percent off from 11 a.m. to close. Happy birthday, indeed.
á bientôt Sale
When: Saturday, Jan. 18; 10 a.m.–5 p.m.
Where: á bientôt, 2501 River Oaks Blvd.
What: Saturday is shaping up to be a great day for local shoppers, because another favorite retail institution—the chic River Oaks treasure that is á bientôt—is bringing back its uber-popular seasonal sale. Twice a year, tons of highly covetable merchandise gets price-slashed and fashionistas rejoice—and line up around the block, so get there early.
When: Saturday, Jan. 18; 4–6 p.m.
Where: The Tasting Room Uptown Park, 1101 Uptown Park Blvd.
What: Are you...single? 25 or older? Gainfully employed? Sick of swiping? If you answered yes to all, it might be a sign to check out this New Year-themed dating event. It's like speed dating in the sense that it occurs in public, with strangers, over a two-hour block of time, but there are "no rounds, no bells, and no pressure." Rather, find a "romantic, relaxed atmosphere" with pre-selected singles to meet face-to-face and a professional matchmaker ready to help. Purchase your ticket online ($20) and you'll be sent a link to a (private) dating profile to list your match preferences; at the event, you'll see the photos and first names of other daters and will have 24 hours to express interest; if both parties do, you'll then be able to send an email. It's like real-life Tinder, but minus all the fish pics.
When: Sunday, Jan. 19; noon–6 p.m.
Where: Karbach Brewing Co., 2032 Karbach St.
What: Shop Local Market presents this "art show for the baddies," full of local eats (Planet Churro, Hungry Hippo Ice Cream & Treats, Love Truck, and more); local beer (Karbach, duh); and tons of local artists and vendors selling everything from soap and streetwear to candles and costumes.
