In 2019, Martha Suarez started Picnics in the City, a luxury picnic delivery service, here in Houston.

While living in Paris about five years ago, Martha Suarez spent carefree Friday nights sipping wine with friends and gazing at the Eiffel Tower. She didn’t think anything of it; she just enjoyed the experience. Then, four years later, she turned that experience into a business. In 2019, the University of Houston graduate started Picnics in the City, a luxury picnic delivery service here in the Bayou City. Want a social media-worthy brunch in Buffalo Bayou Park? Or maybe a backyard date night? Suarez’s service is there for you.

While COVID-19 put a temporary stop to gathering around the picnic table, Picnics in the City came back in action mid-May and is offering more options and services than ever, from social-distanced celebrations to custom-made boxes ready to ship.

Plan your picnic by visiting their website and booking your experience 72 hours before the desired date. Then it’s time to pick your package, such as a simple picnic for two, an enchanted garden, and a baby gender reveal party set up.

Choose to have your picnic in a local park or your own backyard.

After choosing from their selection of packages, which range $159–570 in cost and can serve two-to-15 people (extra guests can be added for $20 per person), you can explore their selection of add-ons. Between fresh flower centerpieces, glowing marquee letters, and a variety of food options, customizing your perfect (incredibly Instagramable) picnic is just a few clicks away.

Because of the pandemic, and the need for continued social distancing, Suarez says most of the picnics lately have been smaller, at-home deliveries. However, she says if someone wants a larger party, Picnics in the City can split tables three ways so you can spend time with friends and family while staying at a comfortable distance from those you didn’t arrive with.

While Picnics in the City was closed this past spring, Suarez says she used the time to create a new service dedicated to showing love to those you can’t be with during this time. “I was so bored sitting at home, and I was missing my picnics so much,” Suarez says. “So I decided to start making contactless boxes where you can build your own and choose whatever you want within your taste and budget.”

If you can't be with your loved one in person, send them a luxury gift box.

Choose from a variety of pre-made boxes, such as “GRAD #2020,” “SPOIL YO MAN!,” and the “BIRTHDAY BOX,” which range $20–75. Or build your own box, and choose from a wide variety of items, like a wire cheese slicer, cake in a cup, sticker books, and even a quartz roller, that range $5–75. Either way, you can craft a gift box that congratulates, comforts, or sends a hug when you can’t.

Once you’ve got your box selected and stuffed to the brim with goodies, top it off with a custom message printed on the inside, and it’s ready for shipping. Or, if you need a bit of retail therapy for yourself, visit their online marketplace to shop all things beauty, self-care, and cocktails. You can also browse their party shop that offers plates, cutlery, and festive decor for your next occasion.

And although the company is only a year old, Suarez says she has plans to make her fledgling company bigger and better than ever. “I wasn’t expecting to grow that fast, and I’m so thankful,” she says. “I’m just trying to add as much as I can.”

Keep your eyes open, because you may just see them opening their own extravagant party venue in the future.
