No One Wants to Vacation in Houston

Houston fares poorly in Texas Highways's list of best in-state destinations.

To celebrate its 40th anniversary, Texas Highways polled its readers last fall and asked them to come up with a list of the 40 best in-state travel destinations.

Any sense of suspense for Houstonians was crushed early, along with our civic pride. We came in at #36, just ahead of the haunting, naturally Gothic splendor of Caddo Lake State Park and just behind the wildlife parks and dinosaur parks to be found in and around the Paluxy River in Glen Rose. We came in ahead of Lubbock and behind Amarillo and four slots behind the Panhandle metropolis of Dalhart, which smells like a feedlot and is infested with flies, but (faint praise alert) does have better restaurants than nearby Dumas.

The list is to be unveiled in bits and pieces over the course of this year. Watch in agony as Dallas and Austin rank higher than us.
