The new KB Kasuals boutique in The Woodlands.

For as long as anyone can remember, The Woodlands has been a great place to shop—assuming you like chain stores. Shopping districts like Market Street and The Woodlands Mall have brought major brands like Trina Turk, Madewell, Nordstrom and Tiffany & Co. to the increasingly tony suburb, but locally owned shops have been thin on the ground.

Krista Burks thinks the area is ready to change that. Since 2012, Burks and her mother have owned KB Kasuals in the River Oaks Shopping Center, a contemporary boutique specializing in relaxed, youthful looks—essential tees, slouchy sweaters, distressed denim and sandals, with a few more polished dresses and skirts thrown in the mix to create the ultimate California girl look.

Earlier this month they opened a second KB Kasuals location in The Woodlands, making KB Kasuals one of the first retailers to debut in the new 66-acre Hughes Landing mixed-use development overlooking Lake Woodlands. The store will soon be joined by retailers and restaurants like Whole Foods Market, Truluck's, Del Frisco's Grille and Local Pour.

"I saw there was a market in The Woodlands because my parents live up there and there's no place to shop, no locally owned stores," says Burks. "We wanted to bring something modern and the response has been really great."

The new KB Kasuals is 1,000 square feet, double the size of the original River Oaks location. The design centers on a clean palette of white and grey punctuated by touches that are both luxe, like the silver-toned chandelier, and rustic, epitomized by the cow skull decorating one wall. (The clothes may be California chic, but this is Texas, after all.)

For The Woodlands location, Burks has brought in new brands like Haute Hippie, Nicole Miller, NSF, Wildfox Sunnies, Feel the Piece and Hat Attack. Burks says that dressier brands like Haute Hippie and Nicole Miller have been among the most popular among customers at the new store, and she'll be mindful of the styles that connect with her Woodlands clientele as adds new lines and brands going forward.
