EAT
Indulge in Lunar New Year delights
Various Locations
With Lunar New Year in full force, the weekend is a time for celebration and jubilation. Like January 1, the Asian holiday also comes with a host of specific foods you can eat for prosperity and fortune. Gobble up dumplings and noodles for wealth and longevity at standbys like San Dong and Loves Dumpling House. Dig into whole steamed fish at Hong Kong Food Street or Fung’s Kitchen to ring in the new year with abundance. Hunt down some bánh tét, or sticky rice cakes, from Alief’s Duc Huong Gio Lua for prosperity. —Erica Cheng, news and city life editor

Sip one of the best margaritas at the best of the best
Various locations
National Margarita Day is on Sunday, and Houston doesn’t gotta get ready, because it stays ready. With an abundance of Mexican and Tex-Mex restaurants, there are plenty of options for where to get your marg fix. Whether you like yours frozen or on the rocks, Houstonia has rounded up the top favorites, which include Picos’s original shaker margarita. —Brittany Britto Garley, editor in chief
HOU
Catch a lion dance in celebration of Lunar New Year
Various Locations
After you’ve eaten your fill of foods, catch some of the city’s best lion and dragon dances. The weekends are peak performance times for troupes like Houston Lion Kings, Unity Lion Dance, and Lee’s Golden Dragon, the oldest group in the city. Over the weekend, Lee’s will perform at both Phat Eatery locations and the Katy Asia Town H-Mart; Houston Lion Kings will perform in Friendswood on Sunday at Uju Asian Eatery and Gastropub; Unity Lion has scheduled shows in Sugar Land, Memorial Park, and Katy through the weekend, too. View Ghanaian fantasy coffins at the National Museum of Funeral History
North Houston
If you were to go right now, what vessel would you want to be in when ferried into the afterlife? That’s the sort of question the display of Ghanaian fantasy coffins answers at the National Museum of Funeral History. A functional art form created by Ga carpenter Seth Kane Kwei, these coffins are anything but ordinary, each displaying who a person was and “what they want to achieve in the afterlife.” That yields everything from crustaceans, giant Twix bars, and Mercedes-Benz. —BBG

Browse Black art at The Reading Room
Downtown
The first time I stepped inside the Reading Room, I felt this quiet rush of seeing shelves filled entirely with books celebrating Black art, culture, and creativity. The Downtown space invites anyone to slow down, flip through beautifully bound monographs and rare finds, and sit awhile in a setting that feels both intentional and affirming. Beyond being a vibey place to study and think, it’s a place to feel seen. —BBG
Venture out to The Woodlands
So, sure, The Woodlands might not be the ideal place to live for everyone (our arts and culture editor Meredith Nudo details why here), but it can be a fun place to get away for the weekend. Our guide helps map out a weekend with scenic trails, waterfront dining, live music, and hotels that make it easy to settle in. When I’m staying with my entire family (toddlers included), I opt for the Woodlands Resort, which has on-site restaurants, a golf course to keep my husband busy, a pool and splashpad for the littles, and trails, bike rentals, and a Saturday farmers market for me. When it’s just the adults, we love staying at the Westin, which is within walking distance of a bunch of restaurants, a trolley to take you to other attractions, and opportunities to paddleboard and canoe. Check out the print version in the Winter issue to map out your stay in a more interactive way. —BBG
