Mural artist Alex Roman Jr. (aka Donkeeboy) recently completed a piece that honors Burns Original BBQ at the landmark smokehouse. It tells the famous barbecue joint's story with depictions of Burns Original BBQ Sauce; founder Roy Burns Sr.; the 44 Acres Homes bus route logo; owner Cory Crawford's brother and former baseball player Carl; and late food writer, personality, and chef Anthony Bourdain, who visited the spot with rapper Slim Thug during his 2017 taping for Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown.
Sweet Paris Creperie has a sweet new treat for the holidays, and luckily it's not a three-decker sauerkraut and toadstool sandwich with arsenic sauce. The Grinch is a crepe with green batter, crème brûlée, red strawberries, green M&M's, and dulce de leche. Of course, it looks just like a Christmas tree and is just adorable.
The Rustic is getting into the tamale spirit ... and also the spirit known as tequila ... with Tamales & Tequila, scheduled for Wednesday. From 7 to 9 p.m., get a sampling of tequilas thanks to Armbhar Tequila, and free tamales when you purchase a drink off of the reserve tequila menu.
A few restaurants and bars are rolling out new menu items for winter. a'Bouzy is offering entrees like grilled wild Alaskan stuffed salmon with shrimp, crab and brie; and sous-vide Berkshire bone-in pork chop with orange preserve, buttery cinnamon carrot spaetzel and kale; lunch items like a steak sandwich with chipotle aioli; and beef bourguignon with potatoes; and weekend brunch dishes like a toast service; and a bacon, avocado, lettuce, tomato, and egg sandwich. That just scratches the surface—you'll have to visit the restaurant to learn more.
Mongoose vs. Cobra has a few new winter cocktails. Okay, like 24. Some classics have moved in, along with a few original creations like Sweater Weather (Monkey Shoulder, sherry, walnut, maple, pear) and Hocus Pocus (Calamity Gin, lime, blackberry, sage, cardamom), and you can in part thank new lead bartender Josh Alden (formerly of Moving Sidewalk) for those. The classics include a white negroni and a jungle bird.
Poitín recently launched Social Sundays, which a DJ and other entertainment. Now it's throwing in a Sunday roast. Order the roast by 5 p.m. the Friday before and make your reservation for any time from noon to 9 p.m. Sunday. Options include smoked and roasted whole chicken, Berkshire pork rib roast, and standing prime rib roast. Potatoes, vegetables, and gravy come with. It's $100 per roast, and it should feed about four.
There is another Hopdoddy afoot. The popular, Austin-based burger bar is coming to Baybrook, specifically 820 W. Bay Area Blvd. in Webster, right near NASA. Opening day is December 17.
