Yes Ma’am, No Ma’am: What’s Worth It (and What’s Not) at the Houston Rodeo

The Houston Rodeo draws in millions of locals and visitors alike each year for roughly three weeks of nonstop fun, agricultural competitions, and live entertainment. But that doesn’t mean it’s always smooth sailing. An event this big is bound to cause some headaches here and there. So, the question is: What’s worth it, and what isn’t? Houstonia may not have all the answers, but here’s our take.
yes MA’AM
Amazon for cowboy boots. We love supporting the local businesses that make the cowboy boots that fuel our year-round Western aesthetic and Rodeo ’fits, but when times are tough fast fashion can work in a pinch. (Shoe inserts will likely be a must.)
NO MA’AM
The 2026 entertainment lineup. We were thrilled about J Balvin and Kelly Clarkson, but the concert schedule could still use some work to better represent the city. (Hint: more women performers).

Trying all the new food. While some may seem absurd (cue up the Spicy Pickle Roll-Up), most foods that make their debut at the Rodeo are shockingly appetizing.
NO MA’AM
Turkey legs. This so-called festival staple is overrated and often overdone.
yes MA’AM
Visiting the Champion Wine Garden. This annual feature on Houstonia’s must-list is a place to expand your palate with award-winning wines.
NO MA’AM
Pedicabs. More walking after a long day at the Houston Rodeo might not be ideal, but neither is the pedicabs’ upcharge.
NO MA’AM
Parking at NRG. Expensive and not worth the headache. Rideshare, take the shuttle, or get someone to drop you off.
yes MA’AM
Spending your money on carnival rides. Don’t be a wuss—the carnival is here once a year. Channel your inner child, and take advantage while you can.

Mutton bustin’ in the Junction. Nothing is cuter (or more fun) than watching a kid hold onto a sheep for dear life in the name of friendly competition.
NO MA’AM
Skipping the preshow Rodeo activities. You might be here to see your favorite
musician, but the calf scramble and chuck wagon racing are worth watching.

Visiting the exhibitions. Cool off with some much-needed A/C while you browse through the AgVenture area or go shopping in Hall E.
NO MA’AM
Going during spring break. When the kids are out of school, things get way too crowded.
