New Year, New You

New Year’s Resolutions to Keep Fit in Houston without the Gym

Instead of getting a gym membership you’ll cancel soon, why not pick up some new hobbies in the city?

By Uvie Bikomo January 2, 2024

Whether it's kayaking, paddleboarding, or yoga, Houston has lots of opportunities to stay physically active while exploring the city.

As we say hello to 2024, an all-so-common urge to make lifestyle changes in this new year beckons. Hundreds of people will flock to their nearest gym for the traditional fitness resolutions, but that tends to take a lot of work to maintain.

Forbes survey found that while improving fitness ranks highest among New Year’s resolutions, most people quit their goals in three months. To make sure yours stick, try aiming for activities that feel less like chores and incorporate elements of fun and relaxation.

Here are some ideas that are not only physical but will also have you discovering more of Houston.

Explore the city with Tour de Hood

Tour de Hood is a unique initiative that promotes both physical health and mental well-being. Founder Veon McReynolds leads free bike rides, mostly in Third Ward and some other parts of Houston, as well as kayak and camping expeditions. This nonprofit has evolved from casual rides with friends and family to a weekly tradition open to all fitness levels, ages, and family sizes. Every Wednesday, participants are welcomed with open arms and provided with bikes, helmets, water, and fruit, eliminating any excuse not to join in.

Post's Skylawn is a 200-acre rooftop park and organic farm that hosts multiple wellness and social events.

Try out free yoga at Post

Post, in the renovated Barbara Jordan Post Office, is downtown Houston’s newest hub for culture, food, and recreation. Every first Saturday of the month, head up to the building’s Skylawn, the rooftop with great views of the downtown skyline, for a rejuvenating yoga class led by Black Swan. Bring your own mat, towel, and water bottle, and even a friend to join in. Whether you are a seasoned yogi or a beginner, this event caters to all levels. In the case of cold weather or rain, the yoga session transitions indoors. When you’re done, you can treat yourself to a smoothie at Post’s international food hall.

Hike Buffalo Bayou Park while bird-watching

For those seeking a more serene physical pursuit, immerse yourself in the tranquility of Buffalo Bayou Park. Try out one of the hiking trails along the water and take the opportunity to see how many bird species you can spot along the way. This contemplative activity not only fosters physical wellness but also provides a moment of connection with nature to appreciate the beauty that surrounds the bayou.
