There is plenty for kids to do at this year's Houston Indie Book Festival tomorrow, but the lucky tykes have options. Gwendolyn Zepeda, Houston's first poet laureate, will kick off the second annual El Día de los Niños/El Día de los Libros celebration at Discovery Green tomorrow at 2 p.m.

The free, two-hour event is presented by the Houston Public Library, Arte Público Press, Discovery Green, and Writers in the Schools.

Zepeda will read a family-friendly poem and also introduce other authors, including Monica Brown, whose books include Tito Puente, Mambo King/Tito Puente, Rey del Mambo, published this year. Arte Público Press founder and director Nicolás Kanellos also will be on hand to lead a sing-a-long - a Latin American children's folk song about a singing frog.

Zepeda's selection as the city's first poet laureate was made earlier this month. Best known for her fiction, including such books as Growing Up Tamales and Houston, We Have a Problema, Zepeda also is a poet with a book of poems due out next year: It's Zepeda Not Zapata.

El Día de los Niños / El Día de los Libros (Children’s Day/Book Day) is an annual event founded in 1996 by Pat Mora, an award-winning author. Día emphasizes the importance of literacy for children of all backgrounds. The celebrations are held across the country on or near April 30.
