Yes, the classic musical turns 75 this year, but this ain't your stuffy high school Rodgers and Hammerstein production. Theatre Under the Stars went big for this production, casting a racially and ethnically diverse range of actors and initiating a first-ever collaboration with Houston Ballet, which has lent its dancers and choreographers. And the story's continued relevance is indisputable: “This is a musical about how America understands itself,” director Kevin Moriarty tells us.

The Big Show Opening

Every year Lawndale does away with the traditional gatekeeping and puts out an open call for submission from artists living within a 100-mile radius. Then a juror—this year Evelyn C. Hankins of the Smithsonian's Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden—narrows the works to what amounts to an artistic cross section of Houston. Like what you see? A limited number of admirers can now take the art home with them.
