UPDATE: Through a massive, glaring, uncaffeinated oversight, Beyoncé's two "On The Run" tour dates were omitted from this weekend roundup. This was a mistake. Beyoncé (and Jay-Z) will slay Saturday and Sunday at NRG Stadium. There are still tickets. You should go. We regret the error.
Oklahoma!
Thru Sept. 23 | Hobby Center for the Performing Arts
Yes, the classic musical turns 75 this year, but this ain't your stuffy high school Rodgers and Hammerstein production. Theatre Under the Stars went big for this production, casting a racially and ethnically diverse range of actors and initiating a first-ever collaboration with Houston Ballet, which has lent its dancers and choreographers. And the story's continued relevance is indisputable: “This is a musical about how America understands itself,” director Kevin Moriarty tells us.
Tickets from $30. Hobby Center for the Performing Arts, 800 Bagby St. 713-315-2525. More info and tickets at tuts.com.
Houston Ballet Presents An Evening of Stars

Free. Miller Outdoor Theatre, 6000 Hermann Park Dr. 832-487-7102. More info at milleroutdoortheatre.com.
Hasan Minhaj
Sept. 15 | Cullen Performance Hall
The former Daily Show correspondent makes a stop in Houston for his "Before the Storm" tour that takes shape as an hour of "cool, insightful commentary on both the political and cultural landscape of the country that we live in right now." Consider it a sample of what's to come—the comedian gets his own weekly Netflix talk show this fall.
Tickets from $38. Cullen Performance Hall, 4800 University Dr. 832-842-3131. More info and tickets hasanminhaj.com.
The Big Show Opening
Sept. 15 (Exhibition thru Nov. 11) | Lawndale Art Center
Every year Lawndale does away with the traditional gatekeeping and puts out an open call for submission from artists living within a 100-mile radius. Then a juror—this year Evelyn C. Hankins of the Smithsonian's Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden—narrows the works to what amounts to an artistic cross section of Houston. Like what you see? A limited number of admirers can now take the art home with them.
Free. Lawndale Art Center, 4912 Main St. 713-528-5858. More info at lawndaleartcenter.org.
