5 Things You Must Do This Weekend, August 2–4

Brace yourselves: White Linen Night is upon us.

By Morgan Kinney August 2, 2019

Houston Shakespeare Festival

August 2–11 | Miller Outdoor Theatre

On deck for this year's edition of the free outdoor theater festival: a blood-soaked production of Julius Caesar, along with the comedy As You Like It. “There are very few actors who have the skills and courage, the bravado to act to the scale of Miller Outdoor Theatre,” Artistic Director Jack Young tells us. “It has to be someone who can say I’m going to get up there and deliver all the way across a distance of almost a football field.”

Free. Miller Outdoor Theatre, 6000 Hermann Park Dr. 281-373-3386. More info at

Jurassic Quest

August 2–4 | NRG Center

Do the animatronic dinosaurs at Jurassic Quest accurately reflect current scientific consensus that the massive creatures were nearly all feathered? No! Does that make the rides, activities, and overall spectacle any less enjoyable? Also no! Bonus points if you spot the president's signature looming over the event.

Tickets from $22. NRG Center, 1 NRG Pkwy. 936-588-3332. More info and tickets at

Carly Rae Jepsen

August 2 | House of Blues

If you wrote off 2012's megahit "Call Me Maybe" as a one-note, one-hit sensation, well, joke's on you! Carly Rae, both third-place finisher on Canadian Idol and "21st-Century Mystic," has gone on to release two critically-acclaimed albums. Friday's stop on her Dedicated tour is sure to include plenty of tracks from 2015's Emotion.

Tickets from $36. House of Blues, 1204 Caroline St. 888-402-5837. More info and tickets at

Houston International Jazz Festival

August 3 | Cullen Performance Hall

Pianist Alex Bugnon and songstress Oleta Adams take the spotlight at the 29th Houston International Jazz Festival, set to kickoff August Jazz Month. Friday brings an opening party at Axelrad, with a special Sunday scholarship jazz brunch to follow.

Tickets from $55. Cullen Performance Hall, 4300 University Dr. More info and tickets at

White Linen Night

August 3 | W. 19th Street

While the all-white summertime party remains centered on the main drag of W. 19th Street, most of the Heights will be now engulfed by thousands of revelers come Saturday evening. Expect plenty of live music, food trucks, art vendors, and drink specials; don't even think about finding parking (just Uber).

Free, 6–10 p.m. 600–900 blocks of 19th Street. More info at
