Amid continuing uncertainty surrounding COVID-19 and the state of the performing arts, Theatre Under the Stars has played a bit of musical chairs with its 2020-2021 schedule, switching around the dates on two of its productions.
The company’s upcoming season, announced back in January before the coronavirus pandemic swept through the U.S., was slated to kick off in September with the highly-anticipated and Broadway-bound revival of 1776, followed by the big-haired ’80s jukebox musical Rock of Ages in October. These shows have been postponed.
Instead, the season will now begin in December with Disney’s The Little Mermaid and conclude with Rock of Ages in August and 1776 in the fall of 2021. While TUTS's season remains entirely intact, the switcheroo has led to one clear creative change. Rather than hitting the Bayou City stage before its trip to the Great White Way, 1776, helmed by Tony-winning director Diane Paulus, will now arrive in Houston fresh off its Broadway run and—in even more exciting news—with the original Broadway cast.
And as previously revealed, this cast is made up entirely of female, non-binary, trans, and gender-queer performers. Now, that’s a spin on our Founding Fathers we can’t wait to see.
