Houston Symphony has extended it hour-long livestream events series, Live from Jones Hall, through August. Like last month's performances, the new lineup also features works from a diverse group of composers, including William Grant Still, the "Dean of Afro-American Composers"; trailblazing American composer Missy Mazzoli; and Jazz at Lincoln Center Artistic Director Wynton Marsalis. Each performance will also include audience-favorite composers like Stravinsky, Vivaldi, and, of course, Mozart (there's so much Mozart).

This month's performances will also welcome a few guest conductors back to Jones Hall: Nicholas McGegan (Aug 8), retired music director of Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra and Chorale who lead Houston Symphony's performance of Handel's Messiah back in December; Kensho Watanabe, former assistant of the Philadelphia Orchestra (Aug 22); and Giancarlo Guerrero, Grammy-winning music director of the Nashville Symphony (Aug 29).

More than three months after cancelling the remainder of its season due to the coronavirus, the Houston Symphony will make a triumphant return to the Jones Hall stage. But their audience won’t be in the performance hall’s seats.

Starting in July, the Symphony will host new, hour-long livestreams showcasing repertoire not often featured during its regular programs, while also spotlighting different sections of the orchestra. According to the press release, works from composers like Scott Joplin, Silvestre Revueltas, and Florence Price, will make appearances in the series alongside works from audience-favorite composers including Bach, Strauss, and Stravinsky.

The Symphony made a successful pivot to online programming at the end of April when it launched its weekly Living Room Series concerts, the final of which airs tonight, but returning to the company’s home stage “ will be emotional for all of us,” Houston Symphony Executive Director and CEO John Mangum said in a statement. “It's a challenging time for all of us here, but one that also presents the opportunity to explore repertoire for smaller ensembles from a wide variety of composers that really gives our individual musicians a chance to shine.”

News of the new livestream concert series comes two weeks after the Symphony announced it had laid off 25 percent of its staff to help the organization overcome an $11 million deficit incurred due to COVID-19. Before that, the organization had received a federal loan through the Payment Protection Program and negotiated pay cuts with its staff and performers.
