Blue Willow Bookshop has hosted a number of notable figures over the years—you can see their signatures scrawled above the shop’s bookshelves—and sometimes, it’s even hosted whole families of authors. Take the Bushes, for instance. Owner Valerie Koehler says she’s hosted Laura Bush, Barbara Pierce Bush, Jenna Bush Hager—basically everyone in the clan except former President George W. Bush.
“He’s the only one I haven’t interviewed yet, besides grandkids,” she jokes.
Well, she’s about to complete the tetralogy, so to speak.
On April 20, Koehler will host a virtual conversation with the 43rd president about his new book, Out of Many, One: Portraits of America's Immigrants, which comes out that day as well. Similar to Portraits of Courage, the President's New York Times Bestseller honoring veterans, the new book features four-color portraits—painted by Bush—and corresponding stories of 43 immigrants who have had a lasting impact on the U.S.
“I am looking forward to being able to talk about the people," says Koehler, "why he decided these people, and [how] some of them he has personal connections to.”
While some of Blue Willow’s virtual events are shared on YouTube afterwards, Koehler says this one won’t be. Attendees will receive a copy of Bush’s book—the first 750 tickets will be signed, the next 250 will come with a signed book plate—and a Zoom link before the event begins.
Tickets cost $42–$52, depending on whether your book copy must be shipped. Learn more and buy them here.
