It felt like Stages had barely ushered audiences into its brand-new, $35-million home at the Gordy when the pandemic hit last year, forcing theaters across the city to temporarily close their doors.
Well, the Gordy's doors are finally re-opening to audiences once more, Stages recently announced, and its 44th season will be an in-person occasion. The season, which boasts six world premieres, kicks off with Hook’s Tale, a new interpretation of J.M. Barrie’s classic story about the boy who wouldn’t grow up, in October. Other highlights include Sister’s Christmas-timed return to Stages and the TV-show inspired MacGyver: The Musical, as well as Civil Rights-set You Are Cordially Invited to Sit-In from Houston playwright ShaWanna Renee Rivon and Song of Me, a story about “family, tradition, Vietnamese cooking, and growing up in Houston” by Mai Lê and Đạt Peter Ton.
And if October feels too far away, fans will have the chance to get reacquainted with the space during the company’s upcoming summer production of Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill (June 18–July 18), which finds legendary jazz singer Billie Holiday reminiscing about her life and career during one of her final 1959 performances.
