The 3rd Annual Foodways Texas Symposium

April 4-6, 2013 Austin, Texas

The theme of the 3rd Annual Foodways Texas symposium this year is "Our Barbecue, Ourselves," an exploration of the past, present, and future of barbecue in Texas and its ties to Texas cultural history and identity.

John T. Edge, Joe Nick Patoski, Daniel Vaughn, Bryan Bracewell, Toni Tipton-Martin, and yours truly will be among the speakers.

But the real news is that Aaron Franklin, Justin Fourton, Greg Gatlin Levi Goode, and a host of other famous pitmasters will be cooking the lunches and dinners.

Houstonia Magazine is one of the organization's newest sponsors. The mission of Foodways Texas is to "preserve, promote, and celebrate the diverse food cultures of Texas." The non-profit organization is headquartered at the University of Texas Division for Diversity and Community Engagement in Austin. I helped get Foodways Texas started in 2010, and I am proud to serve on its board of directors.
