Hey, Houstonians. Have you seen Boyhood yet? Considering the fact that much of the monumental movie—shot by director Richard Linklater movie over 12 years—was filmed in Houston, and the fact that it's one of the best movies of the year, you may want to get on that. Lucky for you, it's screening right now at Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas, where you can get a helluva deal on dinner and a movie.
For the first time ever, Alamo Drafthouse is tossing its hat into the Houston Restaurant Weeks ring, offering a three-course dinner menu for $35 at both Houston locations (on Mason Rd. in Katy and on Vintage Park Blvd. in Cypress). Just as Alamo Drafthouse is no slouch when it comes to its wine and beer selection—both the Katy and Cypress locations actually represent the best craft beer bars in their respective neighborhoods, in our opinion—the chain actually turns out ridiculously good food, too. And I'm not just saying that because I'm in love with their Southern Star Buried Hatchet Porter milkshake.
The $35 three-course menu each night includes some of Alamo Drafthouse's best dishes, from goat cheese and roasted red pepper dip or a baked pretzel with Shiner Bock honey mustard and hatch green chile queso as an appetizer to entree options like beer-battered fish-and-chips, a spicy blue cheese burger, and pizza topped with brussels sprouts, smoked bacon, and goat cheese. And of course, you get your choice of ridiculously good desserts, whether you're going with the classic warm cookies and a scoop of vanilla or one of the spiked milkshakes (the Maker's Mark milk punch is also amazing). As with all other participating HRW restaurants, $5 from each meal goes to benefit the Houston Food Bank. Last year, the combined efforts of all the participating HRW restaurants raised over $1 million for hungry Houstonians.
If Boyhood isn't your bag (or, like me, you saw it as soon as it came out), book a ticket for one of Alamo Drafthouse's other films to book your HRW dinner. The Mason Park location is currently screening first-run movies like Guardians of the Galaxy and Let's Be Cops as well as cult classics like the entire Jurrassic Park trilogy on Sunday, August 31. And over at Vintage Park, there's a Pee-wee's Big Adventure quote-along planned for Saturday, August 23 and a Britney Spears sing-along dance party on Thursday, August 28. That could get messy, but at least you'll sing/dance all those milkshake calories off.
Houston Restaurant Weeks (and the $35 menu at Alamo Drafthouse) runs through August 31.
