The Opening and Closing of the Week: Oct. 24-30

There's no better brioche in town than at Pondicheri.

Each Friday, Gastronaut rounds up the most notable opening and closing of the week.

Most Houston diners these days associate Anita Jaisinghani with her two popular Indian restaurants, Indika and Pondicheri. But Jaisinghani got her first taste of fame as the pastry chef at Cafe Annie before opening Indika in Montrose in 2001. It's no surprise, therefore, that the pastries at her second restaurant, Pondicheri, have been as much a draw as the thalis and chaat.

Those pastries—from the amazing cardamom-orange-chocolate brioche seen above to her sweet and spicy chocolate-oatmeal-chili cookies—are getting top billing now that Pondicheri's Bake Lab + Shop is open. Located just above Pondicheri in West Ave., this standalone bakery is currently in its soft opening phase with current daily hours of 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. After November 1, however, the Bake Lab + Shop will be open during the same hours as Pondicheri—which means you can even pick up pastries at night for dessert.

In closings (and openings, sort of), the Daily Review Cafe has served its last patrons on its famously secluded patio. Eater Houston reports that the Daily Review, which actually closed back in March, is now being taken over, revamped, and reopened by Gary Mosley of the Creek Group, which owns Onion Creek, Dry Creek Cafe, etc. This marks a change for Mosley and his group, which have previously only operated restaurants in the Heights.

But that's not the only Montrose move Mosley is making. He's also taking over Lowbrow, which was sold by owner Omar Afra so that Afra could focus on his primary pursuits: Free Press Houston and its annual, ever-expanding Summer Fest. Thankfully, chef Jason Kerr—whose creative dishes helped place Lowbrow on Houstonia's recent list of the year's best new restaurants—will be staying put. Trailer park burgers and foie gras nachos for everyone!
