Kicking off Recipe for Success Foundation's VegOut! challenge with a fierce chef showdown this Saturday

Houston, you've never seen a cooking competition quite like this—and as someone who's seen/judged a fair number of them, I feel I'm qualified to make that statement (though I'm obviously not totally impartial in this situation, but seriously this event is so cool). This Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Houstonia House, we're hosting Veggie Riot, a chef showdown that's the kickoff party for Recipe for Success Foundation's annual VegOut! challenge.

Each March through this VegOut! challenge, Recipe for Success—the Houston non-profit dedicating to combating childhood obesity through early education—encourages Houstonians to try 30 different vegetables over 30 days. Some you may be familiar with (celery, carrots, onions), others may be brand new (daikon radish, kohlrabi, nopales), but the point is the same regardless: encouraging a pattern of healthy eating to develop over a month.

In support of this worthwhile challenge, our Veggie Riot competition is pitting 13 of Houston's top restaurants against each other to see whose chef makes the most memorable (and, obviously, most delicious) vegetable dish. Check out this all-star lineup:

Plus, in the VIP lounge, you'll find even more vegetable dishes from chef Ryan Hildebrand of Triniti and chef Anita Jaisinghani of Indika and Pondicheri. (Also: private bathrooms and a private bar. Private bathrooms, y'all.)

Please note that while Veggie Riot is all about promoting veggies, this is not a strictly vegetarian event. Though two of the competitors—Bare Bowls Kitchen and Ripe Cuisine—are vegetarian establishments, meat is not off-limits to the other chefs. That said, the focus of each dish should be the vegetable first and foremost, and this is important to know because you—our guests—will be judging all 13 dishes this Saturday. In addition to unlimited samples from each restaurant, bottomless refreshments will be served all afternoon: craft beer from Saint Arnold Brewery, cocktails courtesy of Bayou Rum and Tito's Vodka, vino from Selma Wines, and kombucha from Houston's own Kickin' Kombucha. If you're still hungry after all that, there will also be soft-serve from Chloe's Soft Serve Fruit Co.

Tickets are on sale now for $30 or two for $25 each, though they'll likely sell out before the event itself (as usual), so get yours soon! VIP tickets are limited (remember: Triniti, Pondicheri, Indika, private bar, private bathrooms), but a few are still left for $50. And don't let today's blustery weather deter you; it's supposed to be back up to 71 degrees and partly sunny on Saturday, so come out and throw down with us. We always throw a killer party, and you won't leave this one with the meat sweats.
