Time to Make the Donuts

Extreme Eats: Glazed the Doughnut Cafe

From its namesake glazed donut to a grilled cheese donut sandwich, Glazed the Doughnut Cafe takes donuts to the extreme.

Cookies and cream, strawberry cheese cake, maple-bacon: there's a donut at Glazed for every decision.

I remember a simpler time when the decision on Saturday morning at the donut shop was glazed or chocolate iced? And if you were a late riser, you'd just get stuck with what was left—which in my house was always the dreaded cake donut. Decades later, we're now living in the wild times of adventurous foodies. With popular television shows like Cupcake Wars and Top Chef spotlighting talented pastry chefs, restaurants are rising to the occasion by taking sweets to a higher level of decadence. Why should macarons, cake balls and cupcakes get all the attention? The creative minds behind Houston's wildly successful Glazed boasts a Doughnut Cafe open 24/7 featuring over-the-top, oversized doughnuts.

While other donut shops focus on simpler flavors like raspberry iced or cream-filled, Glazed makes it a point to combine the flavors of all the most popular foods with their doughnuts. Take for example the "macon" doughnut. You guessed it: a maple and bacon donut, a fantastic choice for those who prefer sweet and savory all in one bite. Other popular flavors include crème brûlée, cookies and cream, strawberry cheesecake and s'mores. Glazed even manages to provide a solution for when you can't decide between a donut or a bowl of cereal: Cap'n Crunch or Fruity Pebble donuts, each topped with the classic children's cereals. Paired with a glass of milk, you can satisfy all your breakfast cravings.

Being open 24 hours a day, Glazed definitely sees its fair share of hungry college students at all hours of the night along with your typical after-arty crowd. However, lunch at Glazed is no quiet affair itself, with a daily menu that includes savory sandwiches, some on, yes, donuts. In honor of National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day—which just passed on April 12—I must give honorable mention to the grilled cheese donut sandwich. Call me boring, but I'm a plain glazed fan. It's the original donut flavor, the one that started it all, and when combined with melted sharp cheddar cheese it makes for a terrific, salty-sweet sandwich experience.

The double-stuffed cookies and cream donut is your donut god now.

While Glazed's prices are a tad higher than your local doughnut shop (a signature doughnut costs $2.49), the large size and unique flavors make up for it. The convenience of a local "dessert" cafe being open 24 hours a day, seven days a week is worth the price alone for me, as I'm the person who's often ended up eating Oreos or a Drumstick because I couldn't find a gourmet dessert bar open after 7 p.m.

The visually striking doughnuts at Glazed have become a social media sensation with the hashtag #eatglazed featured in over 2,000 posts on Instagram. Everybody wants to share the look of their unique doughtnut with their social media friends and family. And why not? They are the most extreme doughnuts I have ever enjoyed, with their jumbo size and chunky, colorful toppings. When in donut doubt...#eatglazed.
