Like Rihanna is to Katy Perry, so is ice cream to the month of July; they just go together. As we celebrate National Ice Cream Month in our scorching hot metropolis, many Houston eateries are pulling out all the stops when it comes to over-the- top frozen treats. From ice cream sandwiched between cookies and macarons to spiked (read: adult) milkshakes, there is no better way to beat the heat this summer! Let's go beyond the cone and explore some of the best places to celebrate National Ice Cream Month in Houston.
If you're anything like me, you dive into your ice-cream sans spoon, face first. Smoosh (832-582-9864, smooshcookies.com) does away with spoons completely and "smooshes" their ice cream in between a variety of delicious homemade cookies, inevitable creating the perfect ice cream sandwich. Choose from classic chocolate chip or chunky oatmeal raisin paired any one of their premium ice cream flavors and rolled in a mess of toppings such as coconut, sprinkles, M&Ms—even bacon and Nerds! The wildly popular food truck keeps Houstonians updated on their whereabouts on their website and via social media.
Like mac 'n' cheese, as adults we never really grow out of loving ice cream. With spiked milkshakes taking over drink menus this summer, Doc's Motorworks (1303 Westheimer Rd., 713-521-3627, eatdrinkdocs.com) is rolling out two delicious flavors during their Monday Steak & Shake Night for the 21-and-up crowd. Both the salted caramel bourbon and the vodka peaches-and-cream spiked shakes make a great addition to the juicy rib-eyes and loaded baked potatoes cooked right on the patio. Texas-sized and spiked to perfection, these shakes will no doubt creep up on you, so drink responsibly.
Known for fresh, seasonal flavors of handmade frozen custard, Honeychild's Sweet Creams (832-846-1041, honeychildssweetcreams.com) is a high-quality Houston brand that can be found at local farmers markets and select grocers. Frozen custard differs from ice cream in that it is much creamier thanks to additional egg yolks in the recipe. Die-hard ice cream fans will truly enjoy a taste of Honeychild's Sweet Creams, as flavors are ever-changing with the seasons and a heavy focus is placed on using only organic foods. Check out Honeychild's website for a list of local vendors selling their delicious frozen treats.
To round out National Ice Cream Month, join the city's top mixologists and chefs as they partake in an adult frozen treat throwdown at Yellow Rose Distilling (1224 N. Post Oak Rd., Ste. 100, 281-886-8757, yellowrosedistilling.com) on July 23 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. The first legal distillery within the Houston city limits, Yellow Rose will host Omar Pereney of Peska Seafood Culture, Danny Trace of Brennan's, Rebecca Masson of Fluff Bake Bar, Kathleen Morgan of Honeychild Sweet Creams and many more as they battle it out for the title of Ice Cream Month champ. Guests can enjoy samplings of the spiked creations and particpate in judging for people's choice. Proceeds from the event will benefit Small Steps Nurturing Center. Tickets are available for purchase on spikedbythescoop.eventbrite.com.
