The "Pay What You Want" Day at the Houston Texans Grille will donate 100 percent of its proceeds to Lone Star Veterans Association.

A return to civilian life can be difficult for veterans accustomed to military life—and not necessarily for the reasons you may expect. Often, it's not the high-profile issues such as post-traumatic stress disorder that prevent soldiers from settling back down, but rather more mundane tasks, like updating their resumes. For many of the 3,000 to 4,000 veterans who return to Houston each year—with more expected in the future—readapting to civilian life can be surprisingly frustrating. "They will have to deal with learning to structure their own time, soften their language in a corporate setting, and, perhaps most importantly, sell their experience to the wider world," wrote our own Kerry Howley in 2013, describing just a few of the unexpected hurdles veterans face in simply finding work.

For this reason and many others, organizations such as the Lone Star Veterans Association are vital to returning soldiers, helping them make the transition into non-military life. The Houston-based non-profit focuses on assisting post-9/11 veterans with job placement, accessing family and health care, providing peer support and much more. It's in support of Lone Star Veterans that the Houston Texans Grille at CityCentre is hosting an unusual fundraiser this Monday, July 20.

Whether it's a plate of hot wings or a deep-fried cheeseburger, everything at the Houston Texans Grille is up for grabs.

The "Pay What You Want" Day allows diners to enjoy one entree per person (dine in only; no to-go orders) from the full Houston Texans Grille menu and pay whatever they deem appropriate, with one important caveat: every dollar you pay goes to the Lone Star Veterans Association. From 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Monday, 100 percent of the proceeds from food sales will go to help Lone Star Veterans help our returning soldiers, and all you have to do to help out is eat lunch (or dinner).

The beautiful thing about a fundraiser such as this one is that it allows people at all economic levels to participate; if you only have $5 to donate, you're still making a difference—and getting a plate of delicious baby-back ribs or an organic kale and couscous salad while you're at it. Want to splurge? Order the t-bone steak or the deep-fried cheeseburger (yes, this is a thing that really exists) or the porterhouse pork chops stuffed with smoked Gouda and spinach, and pay what you normally would have for each high-dollar entree. Alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages are exempt from this fundraiser, however, so drinks are on you.
