Tapping Into Tanglewood

A tiny corner of west Houston achieves culinary critical mass.

When Arturo Boada opened his namesake restaurant on Del Monte Dr. in 2011, he was an anomaly in the tony Tanglewood neighborhood. He served fun, interesting fare that brought in folks from across the city and he wasn’t a chain.

Today, the intersection of Del Monte and S. Voss hosts two of the city’s finest restaurants to open this year—Bramble and Roegels Barbecue Co.—in addition to a promising newcomer from Shepard Ross*, The Del.

Expanding outside the Loop for the first time, Ross—whose Glass Wall and Brooklyn Athletic Club are staples in the Heights and Montrose areas, respectively—brings a country club-casual vibe to Tanglewood with The Del, which offers steaks, burgers and seafood, in addition to ping pong, foosball tables and checker boards.

As an added bonus, The Del’s parking lot abuts those of Roegels and Bramble, creating the hitherto unthinkable possibility of a Tanglewood food crawl.

Also Try: The build-your-own ramen bar and surprisingly sturdy barbecue at the recently opened Whole Foods Market on S. Voss and San Felipe.

*UPDATE: As of press time, Shepard Ross was still with The Del; six days ago, Ross announced that he was amicably parting ways with the still-unopened restaurant to focus on his work at Pax Americana.
