That’s-A Nice-A Pizza…Beer

A beer by any other name would not taste like pizza.

According to Wikipedia, Michelangelo is known for his love of pizza. Also, possibly, pizza-flavored beer.

I know this much is true about Stone Brewing’s creation, “It’s Pizza Time!” Cali-Belgique IPA: (Cali-Belgique, btw, is the latest and greatest fusion food trend. Noteworthy dishes includes Waffles Avec Avocado and Moules Frites Burritos….just kidding…I mean, God, I hope so.) The pizza pie-flavored beer is the result of a collaborative effort between the brewery and Kevin Eastman, co-creator of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and will be served at Alamo Draft House Cinema locations nationwide throughout the month in celebration of the release of instant classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows.

Movie-goers brave enough to try “It’s Pizza Time” will encounter a hoppy brew flavored with sweet basil, oregano, fennel, thyme, peppers and pineapple, which (not coincidentally) are the key ingredients of Hawaiian pizza with jalapeños, Eastman’s favorite type of pie. I'm just disappointed that they forgot the ham—another brewer, Jack's Abby, already figured out how to replicate smoked pig flesh with "Fire in the Ham." I can only imagine that Eastman would also enjoy Funky Buddha Brewery's PB&J-flavored "No Crusts" or Right Brain Brewery's "Thai Peanut."

Those who find themselves less than enamored with their order of liquid pizza, may derive (some) comfort in the fact that $1 from each “It’s Pizza Time!” pint will be donated to The Hero Initiative, a charity dedicated to helping comic book industry veterans in need.

“It’s Pizza Time!” is not the only “food beer” on the market. While in the past brewers often relied on bizarre names to sell their products, now it seems funny flavors are the trend. Brewer Jared Rouben of Chicago’s Moody Tongue Beer has also created his own line of inspired-by-comestibles yeasty concoctions, which includes Steeped Emperor’s Lemon Saison, Sliced Nectarine IPA and a Caramelized Chocolate Churro Baltic Porter. And Moody Tongue has just entered the Houston market.

Since I’m not a beer drinker, I’m holding out for foie-gras Chardonnay.
