Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and it’s high time it started acting that way. Morning bites like the quintessential donut and kolache are finally getting the facelift they deserve. So whether you’re going for a double donut sandwich or a buttery biscuit topped with anything (and everything), these remixed breakfast picks are so good you’ll never skip that first meal again.
Gourmet Donuts: Hugs & Donuts
Matt Opaleski and Jason Hill, owners of the veteran food truck H-Town StrEATS, are turning dreams into doughnuts with their inventive breakfast menu. Transformative pastries like the Fruity Pebbles Crunch or Girl Scout Thin Mints cookies give a new way to enjoy the flavors you already love. The Homer, an ode to the Simpsons and Lard Lad Donuts, is topped with homemade strawberry icing and sprinkles that all '90s babies are obligated to try. Can’t commit to just one donut? Follow Hugs & Donuts on Facebook to take advantage of discounted dozens and BOGO donuts during their pop-up happy hour!
Sweet & Savory Kolaches: Kolache Shoppe
If you think kolaches are just dazed and confused hotdogs, then think again. The Kolache Shoppe has mastered the art of yeast dough—risen three times to create a delicately soft melt-in-your-mouth masterpiece. They team up with local vendors to source flawless fillings and toppings for their unique kolaches. They use goat's milk from Blue Heron Farm to make their luscious cajeta from scratch. The slow-smoked prime brisket comes from Grateful Bread. Boudin brought in from Hebert's Specialty meats, just four minutes down the road gets its own doughy place of honor. There’s no better way to show you support local than by trying every single thing on Kolache Shoppe’s menu.
Chicken & Red Velvet Waffle: Liberty Kitchen & Oyster Bar
It seems that the folks at Liberty Kitchen & Oyster Bar have an affinity for all things red velvet, dishing up items like red velvet pancakes, red velvet tacos and the extravagant red velvet waffle. Get ready to confuse your taste buds, because this unconventional take on fried chicken and waffles is sweet, savory, AND spicy thanks to a thoughtful garnish of bourbon pickled jalapeños.
Double Donut Fried Chicken Sandwich: Lee’s Fried Chicken & Donuts
If the mention of “chicken-and-waffles” has you excited, but you’re too drained to utilize a fork and knife, then look no further than the double donut fried chicken sandwich. The secret ingredient in this breakfast sandwich is ‘simplicity.’ No frills. No fancy fixings. Just perfectly fried chicken tenders between two fluffy glazed donuts. Now all you’ll need is a pillow, because this breakfast bite will most definitely put you back to sleep.
Daddy Warbucks: Biskit Junkie
Why settle for boring old biscuits and gravy when you can gorge on a version stuffed with andouille sausage, chorizo scrambled eggs, or even chicken tikka masala? Biskit Junkie reopened at their new Montrose location bringing with them a slew of wild concoctions. One is the Daddy Warbucks—a homemade biscuit sandwich topped with Angus chicken fried steak, gravy, house-made strawberry preserves and fried red onions. Sorry Annie, but not even the real Mr. Warbucks was that rich.
Pancake Flight: Snooze, an A.M. Eatery
Set your alarm because it’s time to hit Snooze… Snooze A.M. Eatery that is. Although the Denver-born chain is new to Houston, its famous pancakes are already a breakfast force to be reckoned with. Morning beer or wine flights might be frowned upon, but there is not yet a stigma on ordering a round of pancakes. Choose up to three of their creative pancake creations including the Pineapple Upside Down, Peach Pie or Blueberry Danish. With more than eight varieties, this might be the hardest (and tastiest) decision you have to make all day.
