Doc’s Bar & Grill
Happy hour: 3–8 p.m. Mon–Fri

There’s no better place to watch Montrose whiz past than this cheerful, dog-friendly ice house on the Lower Westheimer curve. In addition to daily happy hour specials (including $6 sliders and cheese tots), we’re partial to the $1 crispy tacos and $2 cans of Tecate on offer every Wednesday.

Eight Row Flint
Happy hour: 2–6 p.m. Mon–Tue, Thu–Fri; 2 p.m.–midnight Wed

The perpetually packed patio attests to the popularity of this generous Heights happy hour (which gets even better on all-day Wednesdays). Grab a spot at the large parking lot across Yale and settle in for $3 tacos, $3 beers and $5 select cocktails—we recommend the namesake Eight Row Mule, made with Goya ginger beer and Deep Eddy Peach.

Kirby Ice House
Happy hour: varies by day

This pup-friendly Upper Kirby spot stretches across a full acre, so you’ll just about always find an open picnic table or a spot in the shade. Monday brings all-day happy hour from 2 p.m. to 2 a.m., while the bar opens at 10 a.m. on Saturdays to coincide with the Eastside Farmers Market next door, mixing up batches of cheap Bloody Marys and mimosas, $5.50 each until 5 p.m.

Lawless Spirits & Kitchen
Happy hour: 4–7 p.m. Mon–Sat

The sunset view over downtown’s bustling Texas Avenue from the expansive second-story patio at this Rice Hotel saloon is simply stunning, to say nothing of the crowd-pleasing happy hour specials: $2 off bottled beers, $3 off cocktails, wine and draft beers, and $4 off food.

Pro tip: Reserve Rosemont's rooftop cabanas ahead of time for the weekday happy hours.

Rosemont
Happy hour: 4–7 p.m. Mon–Thu

A recent remodel of this second-story space (above Uchi in Montrose) refreshed its signature rooftop cabanas which—pro tip—you need to reserve ahead of time for the weekday happy hours, featuring $2-off cocktails and glasses of wine.

Sonoma
Happy hour: 11 a.m.–6 p.m. Mon–Sat; 4–6 p.m. Sun

While we’re partial to both locations of this laid-back wine bar—the one in Upper Kirby boasts a particularly cozy fireplace for those chilly days—it’s the rooftop patio in the Heights where we most enjoy polishing off $5 plates of truffle fries with $6 glasses of truly terrific sangria.

Wooster’s Garden
Happy hour: 4–6 p.m. Mon–Sat

If your effortlessly chic and pretty friend—you know her—opened an open-air bar, it would be this one, offering comfortable seating, creative yet classic cocktails, and food too fine to be called pub grub. Half-off cocktails and $3 draft beers at this Midtown favorite leave plenty of room on your tab for that dish of caviar or burrata…
