Beer News: Start the New Year With New Brews

Plus, chili and stew, all for you, at Saint Arnold later this month.

Now that we're in 2019, brewers are heading back to the tanks. This week we have a plethora of new brews in the wild, including two releases from Eureka Heights and a St. Patrick's offering from 11 Below. Also, a few spots are getting ready for some big events later in the winter.

News & Events

Imagine spending the afternoon eating chilis and stews while drinking beer. Sounds great, right? Well, head to Saint Arnold Brewing Company on Jan. 27, when it throws its annual One Pot Showdown. A solid 80 teams will participate, using Saint Arnold beer as an ingredient in a one-pot dish that aims to win them the One Pot Trophy (plus $500 and a Traeger Wood Pellet Grill). Proceeds go toward Kid's Meals, which provides healthy lunches to pre-school-aged kids living in poverty. Tickets are $40 a piece. The competition is from 1 to 4 p.m.

Brash is paying homage to and collaborating with Deadhorse, one of Houston's great metal bands, with its Scottish Hell, a wee heavy aged in scotch barrels. Brash will mark the beer release with a party at 9 p.m. Jan. 26 at Rudyard's British Pub that'll include performances by Deadhorse, Dead Stuff, and Moths. The show is free, but you have to be 21 or older.

We're getting ever closer to rodeo season. Karbach, fully aware of this fact, is hosting the Karbach Rodeo Clown Round Up 5K/10K on Feb. 17 at the brewery. It's $30 for the 5K, $40 for the 10K. Pick up packets from noon to 4 p.m. on Feb. 16. The race is at 8 a.m. the next day. Oh, and dress in Western or rodeo clown gear!

New Releases

There are two new beers this week at Eureka Heights. First, its version of Resilience IPA, the beer whose proceeds will go toward Camp Fire victims and cleanup efforts. Second, Mexican Jumping Bean, a vanilla coffee cream ale made with Mexican vanilla beans and Boomtown Coffee. And check this: It's just 4.5 percent ABV. It should be an interesting sip.

Southern Star announced it'll release its brut IPA, I Am Brut, on Jan. 25. 

An 11 percent ABV beer called Resinlord from Sigma is out Saturday. A West Coast IPA, it'll be available in four-packs at the brewery, on draft at the brewery, and in some bars across the city.

Spindletap's Heavy Hands will return soon, plus the new Hirsch Rd. Hop Heads DIPA (which includes four types of hops).

Now that New Year's Eve is over, it's time to think about the next big drinking day (after the Super Bowl). 11 Below is now giving us Dublin Me Luck, an Irish red at 5.7 percent ABV. It'll be available through St. Patrick's Day.

It's No. 1 ... at least in the hearts of the folks at Texas Leaguer Brewing Co. Its newest on limited supply is called Champ, a Belgian strong ale that, according to the brewery, is "conditioned and clarified with an adapted méthode champenoise." That means its capped after a secondary fermentation, allowing carbon dioxide to stay trapped in the bottle, before the cap is removed and a cork is inserted. This'll give it a sparkling quality. It should be a fun drink, if it's still available (50 bottles were released).

Ingenious's new beers this week: Spumoni Ice Cream Sundae, a 10 percent imperial ice cream sundae milk stout with chocolate, pistachio, and cherries; and Smarty with Black Currant and Boysenberry. This one clocks in at 6.5 percent ABV.

Over the holiday week, Platypus re-released its imperial stout Chain Rattler.
