Food News: Houston Billionaire to Buy Nationally Renowned Steakhouses

Plus, a soon-to-open Heights hand roll spot names its executive chef.

Local billionaire Tilman Fertitta has added to his restaurant stable, as his Landry's Inc. has agreed to acquire all of the Del Frisco's Double Eagle Steakhouses and Del Frisco's Grilles from L Catteron. The sale should close at the end of October. It's not the first time Fertitta tried to acquire Del Frisco's—he attempted to get in back in 2012. 

There are 16 locations of the Double Eagle Steakhouse nationwide, including one in Uptown. And there are 24 locations of the Del Frisco's Grille, including one in The Woodlands.


Nobu sushi chef Man Nguyen is taking his talents to the soon-to-open Hando. The 24-seat hand roll, sashimi, sake, beer, and cocktail spot at 518 W. 11th St. in the Heights will open this fall. 

Red Dessert Dive is closed for a few days, but it will reopen Thursday with an all-new look. The bakery is going cashless, as well.

Coltivare sous chef Jonathan Ferguson is working with his family to launch New Magnolia Brewing Company, which is coming this October to 1616 Bevis St. in the Heights. Sean Spiller, formerly of Jester King, will be head brewer of New Magnolia. And to help raise interest in the brewery, Ferguson will be hosting pop-ups on Oct. 1 and 8 at Eight Row Flint. Included in the pop-up: pairings with New Magnolia beer.

In case you were hoping to attend, the Houston Margarita Festival has been rescheduled to noon-10 p.m. Nov. 23. It takes place at the Water Works, 105 Sabine St.

Lyle Bento, who joined Sambrooks Management Co. as culinary director after the company acquired three Cherry Pie Hospitality concepts last year, has left the company, per an announcement this week. "The company is thankful for his contributions and wishes him success in his future endeavors," read a statement from Sambrooks Management Co. The company's concepts include The Pit Room and all-new Candente, plus Pi PizzaSam's Fried Chicken & Donuts and 1751 Sea & Bar
